Located on the Georgia/South Carolina border, city of Augusta is about 150 miles east of Atlanta. It is the second largest metropolitan area and second largest city in the state. The city of Augusta Georgia was originally named in honor of Augusta of Saxe-Gotha, and was the second state capital of Georgia from 1785 until 1795. Official nickname of the city is The Garden City.
