Ukraine History

Ukraine history is as long as it is complicated. Early in the Christian era the Ukrainian steppes were inhabited by different invader. Between 4th to 7th centuries the first Slavic community was established in the area. A Varangian dynasty from Scandinavia settled in Kiev in the 9th century and proceeded to free the Slavs from Khazar control and then united them in them in Kievan Rus. The Ukrainians and their land formed the nucleus of Kievan Rus. Thereafter, Ukraine's history followed a succession of transformations in control of one group over the other.

Later in the mid-14th century, Lithuania started to expand its territories and took over the rule of Ukraine. And in the year 1569 Poland and Lithuania merged which had its ill effects on the Ukraine. In 1596 the Bishops of the Ukrainian Church, to preserve their prestige and esteem established the Greek Catholic faith.

In the 16th century, the term “Ukraine”, came into being. Poland-Lithuania was now struggling against the mounting power of Moscow. Many Ukrainians fled to run away from the religious persecution and serfdom that harsh Polish rule subjected them to. These escapees established a military order known as Cossaks, or Kozaks and took out a revolution against Polish in 1648.
