About Sweden Sweden Cities Sweden Hotels Sweden Travel Guide

Malmo Sweden is the country’s third largest city, located in the southernmost province of Skane, with a population of about 498,000. As the history of Malmo city goes, it started around some time around the year of 1275, and in those days it was known by the name of Malmhauger. The opportunities for good fishing attracted people here, and for hundreds of years, the locals exported salt from here. The city for moat of the times was ruled by Denmark and the German Hansa, but in 1658 it came under Sweden. Today, Malmo and the Oresund region are more topical than ever since the opening of the Öresund Bridge, between Malmo and Copenhagen, on July 1, 2000. It has made Malmo an important centre for Sweden’s contacts with the continent and, with the rest of the world.

Malmo Sweden has more parks, gardens and restaurants per capita than any other city in the country. There are many Malmo Sweden attractions dating back to the Middle Ages. One will find all over Skane more than 200 castles and manor houses, many of them open to tourists, and many inns offering the province’s delicious cuisine. Malmo Stortorg was Scandinavia's largest square with market trading taking place during the 16th century. Even to this day it gives a superb impression with its statue of King Karl X Gustaf, the town hall, the residence, the Hotel Kramer built in the French chateau style, the pharmacy Lejonet and Jörgen Kocks house. Of the Malmo Sweden attractions, the city is very interesting when it comes to architecture. The guests find in the culture quarters of St. Gertrud the oldest half-timbered house in Malmo, "Thottska huset" built in 1558, and many other historically interesting buildings. The St. Petri church was built in the 13th century in the "German" Gothic architecture, with red bricks. The tower fell down once in the 15th century.

Malmo Sweden is a great gateway to the Continent. Over the last years, Malmo underwent a most dramatic post-industrial transformation. This cosmopolitan city has ”reclaimed” the seafront, where entire new city districts full of interesting modern architecture and bustling street life have been constructed.
