The city of Santiago is the capital of the autonomous community of Galicia that enjoys a privileged location on the Atlantic Axis. It is considered to be the third most holy city in Christendom after Jerusalem and Rome. Travel to Santiago is known for the city’s cathedral which is the destination of the important medieval pilgrimage route known as the ‘Way of St James’ (in Spanish the Camino de Santiago). The city of Santiago is now known as a World Heritage City and is the home of pilgrimage destinations and attracts thousands of visitors for its cultural and historical sites.

The city is named after the Apostle Saint James, who is buried here. The city has world class monuments that attract visitors from around the globe every year. The activities in Santiago border around paying homage to the Apostle James and to view the historic sites in honor of the Saint. He was the first Christian martyr and the patron saint of Spain. Legend has it that his disciples brought his remains to Santiago to be buried.

Santiago de Compostela is a city of festivals. The city host number of traditional fiesta round the year. Feria del Ganado is celebrated in May, Fuego del Apostol and Obradoiro at the end of July and Festival of Classical Music in the month of August and September. Santiago restaurants sell fish and seafood which range from all price categories. Santiago restaurants at popular pilgrim eating places witness long queues. In certain instances you might, however, get better stuff at less known places.

The weather in Santiago is quite wet and is perhaps one of the wettest climates in Spain. However, the city of Santiago experiences cooler climate than most other regions of Spain. Tourists will find Santiago to be very comfortable in the summer months when other locations tend to be hot. And the winters are relatively mild. On your travel to Santiago remember that shoes should match with your dress which should be conservatively. One point to remember is that for Spaniards, appearance is extremely important.
