About Portugal Portugal Cities Portugal Hotels Portugal Travel Guide

Faro, the administrative center of Algarve region in Portugal is a nice city with a population of almost 55,000. The ruins of both Arab and Roman periods can be found here in attractive form. However, most of the present architecture excellences in Faro Portugal have been renovated after the disastrous earthquake that occurred in 1755 and 1532. Moors occupied the town in 8th century and it emerged out as a trading port by 1249. After Moors were defeated by the forces of Dom Afonso, Faro took over the administrative role of Algarve area. Bodleian Library in Oxford, England features an important section of collection of books from the palace of Bishop of Faro—the Earl of Essex got hold of all these books after sacking the town in 1956.

The old part of the city is quite attractive and surrounded by Roman walls that date back to 9th century. It was here when Roman Forum were held inside a spacious open square of a 13th Century Cathedral which lies in front of the 18th century Episcopal palace. Weather in Faro is catalytic factor in encouraging the tourists to visit the place. Faro has plenty of attractive buildings in which one is the neighboring 16th century convent that now serves as city’s archeological museum. The Golden Church of Nossa Senhora do Carmo is one of the best instances of gold-leaf woodwork in Southern Portugal. Another place that attracts visitors is macabre spectacle of a chapel lined with the bones from over 1200 monks.

The small Naval Museum consisting of scale model boats and galleons which show the maritime history of the coast is just next to the small boat basin. Today, most of the city’s parts are occupied by apartments, fabulous shops and artistic theatres. You can also enjoy the nature reserve of over 17000 hectares called Ria Formosa Lagoon in Faro. This reserve offers shelter to a number of different birds during the spring and autumn migratory period. Faro Portugal also offers you an opportunity to enjoy the beach that is only 7 kilometers away from the city.
