Albufeira History is filled with tragic instances. The earthquake of 1755 was destroyed the castle of Albufeira city which was once the pride of the city. However, most of the older parts survived the earthquake and have been maintained very well. During Roman times, this city was know as Baltum and later renamed as Al-Buhera by the Moors. After the town was badly hit by the earthquakes of 1532 and 1755, and subsequent years brought even more disasters when the town was besieged and set ablaze during the war of Miguels. All these tragedies did not allow the town to progress and got rid of its poverty only when there was a boom in the tourism of the city.

The steep increase in Albufeira tourism made this once a fishing village a major holiday resort. Now with 15,000 permanent residents, this town offers plenty of tourist spots entertainment facilities. With sun set the character of the town changes. A fabulous collection of restaurants and clubs start getting crowded with people. The narrow streets of the town are spilled by mid night. Albufiera city is blessed with fascinating beaches that extend beast and west of the town. You can enjoy being on beaches like Praia de Maria Luisa, and Praia de São Rafae, Praia de Balaia, Praia de Galé, Praia de Castelo and Praia de Maria Luisa.

Besides the beaches and some old remains, a small museum which features a collection of Ming ceramics and a municipal art gallery also adds to the flavor of visit of the tourists. This museum frequently holds exhibitions. A new virtual archeological museum also adds great charm to the city’s ambience. You can enjoy different and attractive aspects while being on the marina that has been developed on the west side of the town. de Pera, Boliqueime, Guia and Paderne lie near to Albufeira. You will find impressive caverns with large arches at Ponte Grande. Underwater caverns of Grutas do Xorino near Albufeira city will also impress you.
