Norway Food

Norway dining is all about some mouth watering varieties of Norway food. You can experience the best of food in Norway especially the vast breakfasts which are a trademark of Norwegian food. Many a times you will simply be amazed at the enormous breakfasts which constitutes of a variety of fish, meat, cheese and bread served from a cold buffet. In addition coffee and boiled or fried eggs are also served. One important aspect or one could say ‘recipes for Norway food’ is that the Norwegian people like their open sandwiches topped with meat, fish, cheese and salads. Alcohol is taken in limited quantities and is slightly expensive as well. One will generally find beer and wine served in restaurants. However, be aware that in Norway licensing laws are strict and alcohol is sold only by the State through special monopoly. The government is also strict about enforcing licensing hours.

The food from Norway also has its national specialties. A few national specialties are “Koldtbord (cold table), with smoked salmon, fresh lobster, shrimp and hot dishes”. ‘Roast venison’, ‘Ptarmigan’ in cream sauce, ‘Wild Cranberries’ ‘Multer (a berry with a unique flavor)’ are some other national specialties. ‘Aquavit (schnapps)’ is a national drink of Norway. Meatcakes, lamb and cabbage stew along with cod are considered by many to be typical Norwegian food. There is a distinct regional preference as far as dishes are concerned. However, meatcakes rank first in all the regions.

A few Norwegian nutritionists feel that a distinguishing feature of Norwegian eating habits is that they are based on a peasant diet. This is quite different from the diet of other European countries where it has often filtered down from the court through the upper middle classes. A few other culinary experts of repute believe Norway food culture to be a synthesis of the primordial Norse and impulses from the fashionable kitchens of prosperous continentals.
