Vadso history is a settlement which was formed in the 1500s and consisted initially of a fishing village and a church located on the Vadsoya Island. It was in 1833 that the village was granted with the privileges of a township. Finnish settlers settled in the area and soon Finnish became the major language. Finnish is still spoken in many households. Vadso suffered a number of air raids at the hands of the Soviet Union. The town of Vadso comprising the southern coast of the Varanger Peninsula has large areas covered by birch forests.

The chief coastal areas such as the Store Ekkeroy are a hit with international travelers and tourists for its rich and interesting birdlife. It acts as the perfect base camp for an exploration of the Varanger Peninsula.
