Tonsberg

Founded by Harald Fairhair in 871, Tonsberg is the oldest city in Norway. Situated in the county of Vestfold, Tonsberg has a rainbow of colors and landscapes and is rich in history. It is dotted with beautiful coastal towns and with a coastline of tiny wonderful islands, idyllic bay's and an excellent boat life. This town was earlier known with the name Tunsberg. According to Tonsberg City Guide Norway, there are approximately 35,000 inhabitants in this ancient town. Tønsberg has become a leading town of Vestfold county, with a substantial merchant fleet and a Nautical College. It is a well known shipping center. The city has many developing industries that manufacture forest products, processed food, leather, and silverware.

The city is surrounded by some of the country’s major tourist’s attractions like old Viking graves, museums and galleries. Vestfold County Museum is Vestfold's oldest cultural-historical museum, taking over from Tønsberg Museum and Tønsberg Maritime Museum. In 1939, the collections from these museums formed the basis for the new county museum. Emphasis has been laid on the whaling industry, shipping, town and village history, and the Second World War. Situated at the foot of Slottsfjellet with the ruins of the medieval castle, Tunsberghus, the museum has a special responsibility for the spreading of local medieval history. Stokke old village collection and Brår farm are certainly worth a visit. Rural surroundings and recreational areas are also found near the city center. Tønsberg is the capital of nightlife and entertainment packages in the summertime. It is known throughout the country for its bustling and most vigorous nightlife and milieu.
