The climate of Netherlands has a maritime feel with summers being cool and the winters mild. Though the winters are most of the time mild, it can be fairly cold at times with the possibility of snow. The Netherlands climate is also characterized by rainfall which is prevalent all the year round. Whichever time of the year one decides to tour Netherlands, it is advisable that one carry a set of rainwear. The climate of Netherlands is conducive to a European style of clothing which can be of the light to medium weights in the warmer months and medium to heavy weights in winter. One will generally find clouds appearing on the horizon everyday with the winter months even abounding in fog. Rainfall is a common feature which occurs quite frequently. The average annual rainfall is just about 76.5 cm (30 in). The cool summers and mild winters indicate that the Netherlands climate has an average temperature of about 2°C (36°F) in January and 19°C (66°F) in July. This makes it an annual average of about 10°C (50°F). The climate of Netherlands with its mild and damp nature makes it ideal for dairying and the raising of livestock. However, the sunshine which is limited restricts the growing of food crops. One can gauge the changing climate of Netherlands by the rising sea level and the increase in discharge of rivers and the response of nature to temperature changes. River discharge is likely to increase considerably due to more extreme temperatures and precipitation events. One should therefore take steps to mitigate the possible effects of climate change while on a tour of Netherlands. |
