Nepal History

The History of Nepal is characterized by its isolated position in the Himalayas. It has become a multi-linguistic, multi-cultural and multi ethnic country, due to arrival of several settler groups. Nepal history dates back to 11000 years. Neolithic tools excavation shows the advent of Neolithic era. In around 5000 B.C. Nepal has many small kingdoms and in one of those powerful kingdoms was born Lord Buddha. Then later Nepal fell under the rule of Ashokan- Mauryan Empire.

Nepal history was not much disturbed in medieval period, but still the effort of king jaisthitimalia for the unification of Nepal was short lived and it was divided into three kingdoms- Patan, Kathmandu and Bhadgaon. After it started the modern era, when the gorkha kingdom was established by Prithvi Narayan shah. In 1816, the British East India Company got into power and conceded the entire of Gadhwal and Kumaon region under British rule.

Meanwhile, one of the variant generals, Jung Bahadur, tried to topple the regime but the queen met the encounter. It led the massacre on both sides. Among all, the bloodiest of the battle, the Kot massacre, sacrificed 30,000 Nepalese. In the same century there was a long conflict between Ranas and Shahs. Then in 20th century, both the dynasties established matrimonial relation between them and started to rule Nepal jointly. Even their national flag is made up of two triangular flags, representing two dynasties. At last, the cultural history of Nepal has evolved over centuries and encompasses diversities of various ethnic, tribal and social groups. It is manifested in form of music, literature, art, religion etc…
