New Year’s Day This is celebrated nationwide with celebrations featuring music, dance, food and fireworks ringing in the New Year. There is a tradition in which one has to eat twelve grapes, one a piece for every chiming of the bell at midnight. This is supposed to bring luck for the next 12 months. Three King’s Day Celebrated nationwide this is the day when traditional gifts are given to children. A crown shaped sweet, Rosca de Reyes, which gets decorated with candied fruits is served on this day. The Rural Tourism Fair The tourists must not miss this regional event in Oaxaca City, which has been co-created by Amigos del Sol and Planeta.com as an alternative to traditional mass tourism. Here travelers get an opportunity to visit rural areas. The options are multifarious including hiking, biking and visiting community museums and indulging in buying of crafts. Candlemas Day Held nationwide one will see candlelit processions dotting the landscapes of cities and towns accompanied with dancing. To enjoy this national holiday completely families and friends get together to enjoy ‘tamales’ and ‘atole’ which is a hot, sweet drink thickened with corn flour. Visitors will surly enjoy the musical events and parades and fondly remember the memorable moments. Dia de la Constitucion This official holiday commemorates Mexico’s Constitution. Carnival In this festival celebrations begin five days before Ash Wednesday and are marked by parades, parties and dancing in the streets. The carnival in Chiapas is an indigenous celebration involving purification ceremonies and ethnic dances depicting Mayan legends. International Nature Festival The tourists can interact with nature in perhaps the most famous biosphere reserves of Mexico during this festival. Xochimilco Festival This event is held annually two weeks prior to Easter. These four days go back to pre-colonial times when ‘Xochipilli’, the ‘Goddess of Flowers’ and ‘Maculxochitl’, the ‘Goddess of Dance’ were honored to ensure good harvests. In this event a young woman gets crowned as ‘La Flor Mas Bella del Elido’ (the most beautiful flower of the land) who is chosen to preside colorful parades on flower decorated barges along the city’s famous canals. |
