About Mexico Mexico Cities Mexico Hotels Mexico Travel Guide

Oaxaca City is the capital as well as the main city of the Mexican state of the same name. The city located in the Oaxaca Valley in the Sierra Madre del Sur Mountains at an altitude of about 1500 meters has been named in honor of the 19th century president and national hero Benito Juarez. Oaxaca Mexico is perhaps one of the richest states in Mexico in terms of history, culture and archaeology. Historically Oaxaca City has a lot of importance. The area was given to Hernan Cortes after the Spanish Conquest as a compliment for his services to the Spanish Crown. It is also home to perhaps one of the most famous personalities of the country: Benito Juarez. He was originally a boy servant to an affluent family and later became the President of Mexico. It was after the movement of the Spanish into Oaxaca City that the city started to emerge as a prosperous colonial city. And, though it was nearly destroyed by an earthquake in 1854 from the end of the era of Porfirio Diaz the city started rebuilding and growing.

You will find one of the most affluent and varied natural terrain in Oaxaca Mexico. The variety ranges from tropical forests to high mountains and lush arable valleys. One can also enjoy the rugged Pacific coastland in its ruggedness which also offers quiet and tranquility on its beaches with soft sands. One needs weeks to see all the beauty of the city and would also require a number of transport methods such as hiking and horseback to enjoy the beautiful backcountry. Visitors can take back Oaxaca pottery as souvenirs as the pottery and textiles are both famous crafts of the area and well sought after throughout Mexico. In spite of retaining a Spanish colonial feel the city is also a reflection of an indigenous heritage and both blend so wonderfully that it reflects as city’s exquisite charm. On your visit you will definitely feel the unique vibrancy that is generally spoken of by others who have visited it before. The wealth of attractions including El Tule, a 2000 year old living tree is a delight for one and all.
