About Mexico Mexico Cities Mexico Hotels Mexico Travel Guide

Morelia Mexico is located in the Guayangareo valley region and surrounded by the Punhuato and Quinceo hills. It is the capital of Michoacán state. There are many beautiful colonial buildings and churches that are housed in the city’s historic downtown area which has been designated as a world heritage site. The city’s original name was Valladolid and derived its origin from the Spanish city of the same name and was given by the first viceroy of Mexico, Antonio de Mendoza, after the city in Spain in which he was born. The city was renamed after Mexico’s War of Independence to honor one of the greatest heroes born here: Jose Maria Morelos. The aristocratic feel of the colonial city can be gauged from a Morelia apartment complete with an elegant Spanish Colonial architecture wherein one will find the predominance use of pink stone and baroque style domination. On your visit to Morelia Mexico you will find the city extremely well preserved and many planning regulations strictly ensured to keep the authentic look and feel of the colonial heritage.

In Morelia you will come across a cathedral with twin towers reaching a height of about 200 feet. It is supposedly one of the finest in Mexico especially due to its pink stone. The city is also known as a university city with an abundance of apparent history and culture. One will come across a number of good language schools where many people come to study. Visitors to this town can also move around and see the beautiful town of Patzcuaro which is just 40 miles of Morelia. A virtually effortless day trip by car from Morelia to this town makes it worthwhile to get an indigenous feel of the city. The views from this stunning capital city have been best described by someone as a picture postcard. A key attraction not to be missed if you are in the area between the end of October and February is an excursion to the Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary near El Rosario.
