About Mexico Mexico Cities Mexico Hotels Mexico Travel Guide

Merida Mexico is located in the northwest part of the state of Yucatan and is also the capital. It is just about 35 km from the Gulf of Mexico coast. The international tourists are served by Manuel Crescencio Rejon International Airport. The lineage of the city dates back to January 1542 when the Spanish explored Mexico. The original city was founded by the Spanish nobleman Don Francisco de Montejo. The buildings of the city were constructed using stones recovered from the Mayan ruins. The modern Merida Mexico is a city complete with wide tree lined boulevards and stately mansions of historic significance. The largest and bustling city has been termed as the “Paris of the West”. The reason for this sobriquet was the importing of many products from France by the wealthy citizens of Merida Mexico. Another sobriquet also attributed to the city was “White City”. This was in part due to the fact that most people dressed in white and also because white stone (limestone) was used to build many of its buildings. The ‘white city’ theory is also attributed to the city’s colonial roots when slaves and other ‘non-white’ people were denied entry to the city. Your experiences during Merida travel will show the city as the center of many Mayan ruins, colonial cities and natural attractions.

Merida travel will confirm the fact that it is an inviting place to visit while some prefer to see it as a stopover city en route to the magnificent Maya ruins. However, one who takes some time to savor the delights of the city will find it a great treasure with rich Mayan folklore and colonial history. Moreover, the contrasting sights of the city along with the cultural blends and a warm friendly people will ensure a whale of a time during your personal Merida travel. One can take time to relax under the shade or talk with friends while taking a stroll around the Mayor Plaza. Zocalo built on the site of the Maya Temple T-Chum-Can is a chief tourist attraction of the city. Any direction you move about in the city you will find the walk to hold something of historical significance. Most tourists don’t miss out on the opportunity to view the golden clock tower chiming every fifteen minutes and hanging prominently on the Palacio building.
