Meemu Atoll, also known as Mulako Atoll, is situated in between 3° 11' N and 2° 45' N latitude. Out of total number of 33 islands, 9 of these are inhabited. There are two excellent resorts providing luxury accommodation to tourists in addition of excellent recreational activities and fine dining. With Muli, being the capital of Meemu, it is an administrative division of the Maldives. There is a mosque that has earned lot of historical importance in one of their Island, named Kolhufushi, but no Buddhist remains have been found on this atoll. Mulaku Kandu, featuring large submerged pinnacle and are covered with soft corals, is one of the best channels located along the reef in this atoll. Deluge of marine lives have made it a great place for diving and snorkeling. According to the weather forecast for the Meemu atoll, summer monsoon is the best time for diving in the waters surrounding this atoll. Traveling in and around Meemu atoll is made easy by the traditional all purpose vessels which are powered by diesel engines. Larger boats called vedis are used for longer trips to the outer atolls. This atoll has recently been opened up for tourism and some of the places in this atoll are considered pleasurable for relaxed diving or idyllic places. |
