About Jordan Jordan Cities Jordan Hotels Jordan Travel Guide

Climate in Jordan has a characteristic contrast between a relatively rainy season from November to April and very dry weather for the remaining time. The country enjoys Mediterranean style of climate. Generally the summers are hot and dry and winter are cool and variable. Various forms of precipitation occur in winters. Due to inland from the Mediterranean Sea, there is greater seasonal contrast and less rainfall. Atmospheric pressure remains uniform during summer months, while in winters, it shows succession.

January is the coolest month and August the hottest. In summers, there is greatest hike in temperature, which further increases with higher elevation and distance from the sea. In summers the temperature average about 32°C and about 13°C during winters. Amman occasionally experience snows.

Hot and dry wind blown because of low pressure from the deserts produces strong winds from South or Southeast and has direct effect on Jordan climate. This dry sirocco style wind known as khamsin is accompanied by great dust clouds. During such weather condition, there may be 10°C to 15°C rise in temperature in the same day. Such windstorm brings lot of discomfort and destroys crops.

The other common wind, Shammal, which influences climate of Jordan, comes from north or northwest, at intervals between June and September. It flows steadily during daytime and become breeze during night flows from long hours. It generally raises dry continental mass of polar air and warms with the passage over Eurasians landmass. This dryness allows heating of earth surface by the sun and thus, causes high temperature during the daytime.
