The economy of Oristano is mainly based on predominantly farming. It is locate in the Sardinia region of Oristano province and is also the regions main city of the youngest province. Historically as well Oristano holds a pride of place as the capital of Arborea Province which held out relentlessly against the Aragonese invaders. It is generally believed that the inhabitants of the Tharros town founded Oristano in the year 1000. One church quite well known is the church of San Francesco because of its 14th century wooden crucifix which is quite precious actually. It is called the crucifix of ‘Nicodemus’. The city is full of activity at the time of the carnival. At the time of the carnival, you will be quite eager to see a horseback competition held here known as the “Sartiglia”. This has a Spanish flavor. Like all rites which come before Lent, this competition is also a mixture of magic and pagan elements with Christian beliefs. The weather in Oristano is quite a big advantage in terms of pulling in the crowds. Moreover, its location between the fertile plain and the nearby lagoons which are complete with fish makes Oristano travel for fish lovers quite a delight.
