About Italy Italy Cities Italy Hotels Italy Travel Guide

Lecce is a lovely city which is located right in the middle of the Salentina peninsula, the famous "boot's heel", midway between the Adriatic Sea and the Ionian Sea. Lecce, which is the province's chief town, is the principal town of Salento. In Salento the climate is very mild in winter and very hot in summer. The annual average temperature is slightly under 20°C. The days during the year are mostly sunny, except in November and April, when some irregular rains are more frequent. These weather conditions make it possible to visit this town in every period of the year.

Lecce was first a Greek city, and then it became a Roman town. Thanks to its architectural beauties Lecce is known also as "Puglia's Athens", the "South Florence" and as the "Baroque's Capital". If you want to reach Lecce by car you have to drive along the Sole motorway (A14) as far as Canosa and then you have to take the clearway Bari-Lecce. The town is connected to Bari, Brindisi and Taranto through the main roads. If you arrive by train the national railway network connects Lecce to Bari, Foggia, Turin, Rome, Naples, Venice and Milan. If you want to fly the nearest airport is Brindisi-Casale, 40 Km away from Lecce, otherwise you can use the Bari-Palese airport.
