About Ireland Ireland Cities Ireland Hotel Ireland Travel Guide

Transportation in Ireland is as modern as it gets. From trams to car hire service… it is easy to get around the city. Since there is many ways to travel around the city, Ireland transportation makes the journey quick and comfortable.

Car Rental Service
There are several car hire firms in Ireland and you can take them into service anywhere in the cities or at the airports. Make a note that most of the car hire agencies in Ireland will not acknowledge third party collision damage insurance coverage (for example with credit card) when you hire a car. Renting a car in Ireland is very similar to the processes elsewhere where you need a credit card in your own name and a valid driver's license for a minimum of two years without endorsement. Most car rental agencies in Ireland lease car to people belonging to age range of 25 - 72 but in most cases th eminimum age required is 28 in order to rent a full size car. Although there are a few exceptions to this rule, but they are not publicized.

Domestic Air Network
Aer Arann operates an extensive domestic air network from its center in the city of Dublin to Kerry, Cork, Knock, Donegal, Sligo and Galway. They also operate from Cork to Belfast and Galway. At present, Aer Lingus operate only one domestic route from Dublin to Shannon. Ryanair also operates flights from Dublin to Cork and Shannon. British Airways operates a route from Dublin to Derry.

Taxis
All taxis that operate in Republic of Ireland run on national fare basis, so the price should be rather easy to analyze. For more information, you may see the Commission of Taxi Regulation website. Always make sure that the taxi you hire has a valid meter, and that it is used throughout your drive. But it is firmly recommended that you call and book a taxi much before time so as to avoid last minute aggravations. Many a times your hotel or hostels authority arranges for a cab for your convenience.

Tram
The city of Dublin has a tram system, known as Luas which means 'speed' in Irish. The Luas tram service provides link between Dublin's Connolly and Heuston railway stations. This tram operates on two lines. One of them is the red-line that operates from Dublin city centre (Connolly Station) to a large suburb south-west of the City (Tallaght) and the other which is the green line runs south-east (to Sandyford) from St Stephen's Green. Tickets can be purchased from machines before boarding the tram. Tickets are checked in Luas at random by guards but normally ticketing works on a trust system. This means that free rides are possible but do that only at your own risk and be aware that the fines for free riding can be relatively high.

Train
Trains in Ireland are operated by the state-run Irish Rail authority also known as Iarnród Éireann in Irish. These trains operate to and from the city of Dublin. The regularity of the service is being increased, especially on the Dublin-Cork network. If you make on-line reservation for the intercity trip, you can avail of much cheaper fares than what would be available to you at the station itself.

The two main railways stations in Dublin are Connolly Station- for trains to Belfast, Sligo and Rosslare. And Heuston Station- for trains to Cork, Westport, Tralee, Limerick, Kilarney, Galway, Kilkenny and Waterford.
In the Northern region, most of the all services are operated by NIR (Northern Ireland Railways).
