The ruler of Bahawalpur , Nawab Sadiq Mohammed Khan Bahadur built Al Hilal or the 'Land of the Crescent Moon' (Former name of the Palace) in 1931 AD. The royal family of Jammu and Kashmir purchased this place in 1951 for the widowed queen Tara Devi of the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir .

Kangra Fort lies at the confluence of the Banganga and Pataalganga rivers. It is 5,000-year-old fort believed to have been built by Raja Susarma Chandra in the Mahabharata period. Some stone statues of Adinath, Hanuman, Shiva and Parvati dating back to Ashokan period were unearthed here some time ago.
