Nilgiris, a district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, is named after the range of Blue Mountains running across the state. These mountains are the part of large mountain chain, Western Ghats. It is basically a hilly region situated at a height of 900 to 2636 meters. Its steep and rolling topography make it a cultivable land. It provide cooler and wetter climate. Nilgiris India comprises six taluks divided into four panchayat unions besides two municipalities. The district of Nilgiris comprises 15 revenue firkas and 35 village panchayats. There are several tribes residing in the place with known Toda people, whose black, white and red embroidered shawls and culture based upon cattle is most sought after. People generally speak Tamil, but many of them understand Malayam, Kannada, Hindi and English. There are two ecoregions covering portion of Nilgiris, the South Western Ghats montane rain forests and South Western Ghats moist deciduous forest. Nilgiris and South Western Ghats is one of the most important tiger habitat left in India. Mukurthi National park, Silent valley National park and Nilgiri Biosphere Reserves are the three national parks found in Nigiris. It was the first biosphere reserve of India. It is a small fairyland, which has hill station at various altitudes, thus making it a popular tourists’ destination. Cloud touching peaks, dense forests, green plains, rushing streams and valleys and glades etc… form a long list of places of enjoyments for the tourists. |
