About Iceland Iceland Cities Iceland Hotels Iceland Travel Guide

Iceland is a country without high trees or high buildings, majestic landscapes which creates an impression that the times of the ancient gods and medieval knights are not gone. It seems a country from the fairy-tale or myth. In nutshell, it is a land of quiet fishermen’s villages, flourishing fields, beautiful waterfalls and sand beaches. Riding, diving, trekking, swimming, whale watching, dog sledding, angling, snowmobiling, and jeep tours are some of the amazing activities you could enjoy during your stay in Iceland. There are many places in Iceland that worth a visit, which are as follows:

The Westmann Islands (Vestmannaeyjar)

If you are looking for an exquisite place to explore Iceland, the Westmann Islands are the perfect base and a paradise at the end of the world. They are the place where Free Willy (Keiko) has chosen to make his home. A fresh volcano broke way back in November 1963 through the waves, creating the world’s youngest island, Surtsey.

The Blue Lagoon

The Blue Lagoon is one of the most picturesque natural features in Iceland. It is perhaps the most ethereal looking body of water in the world. This man-made lagoon has a water temperature of 40 degree Celsius, and is reputed to have healing powers, especially for psoriasis. Blue-green algae and white Silica mud form natural sediment on the bottom of the lagoon giving it its gentle, opaque, aquamarine color. A visit to the Blue Lagoon will be a truly unique experience for those who choose to bathe in mid-winter or during the long summer nights.

The Árnesinga Folk Museum

Located in Húsið in the village of Eyrarbakki, the Árnesinga Folk Museum is one of the oldest and most remarkable buildings in Iceland which dates back to 1765. Most part of the museum is dedicated to the history of Húsið and its inhabitants. The museum also traces the history of the Árnessýsla. It was considered one of the most cultivated homes in the country. It was originally the residence of the Eyrabakki trading post merchants and their staff.

The Vidimyri Turf Church

Built in 1834 from a mixture of driftwood and turf, Vidimyri Turf Church is regarded as one of the finest examples of Icelandic architecture. It is probably one of the strangest buildings that you will ever see. The pulpit dates back to an earlier church and the Danish altar dates from 1616. This odd architectural style stems from a lack of natural resources. The church is considered as one of the six so-called turf churches that are still standing in Iceland. It has been preserved as a monument and still functions as a parish church.

Hot Pots and Thermal Pools

It is easy to get addicted to Iceland's Spas with their hot pots and thermal pools in every community, indoor or outdoor. It is a luxury for almost no money at all.

The Midnight Sun

If you are willing to see the sun set at midnight during the summer, Iceland is the only place to be in for that. You cannot imagine a more perfect or romantic moment. You may already know that in high summer the sun goes down around midnight and rises almost immediately again. Certainly it is an amazing sight for the visitors.

The Northern Lights

During wintertime if the evenings are cold and the sky is clear, you have the chance to see the magnificence of northern lights (aurora borealis) at its summit.
