Hong Kong Transportation

Hong Kong is a gateway to China and a major transportation hub in Asia. It has a highly developed and sophisticated transport network, encircling both public and private transport. Hong Kong's location is geographically strategic to some of the major travel routes in the world, thus opening doors to Asia. Hong Kong transportation is the world's most efficient, safe, affordable and frequent public transport systems. There are many modes of transportation that provide easy access from one part of the city to another. Some of them are as follows:

  • By Air: Hong Kong International Airport is served by a well-organized and widespread transportation network. Visitors to Hong Kong are assisted by one of the world's largest and most modern airports. Situated at Chek Lap Kok on the Lantau Island, Hong Kong International Airport truly makes Hong Kong the gateway to Asia.
  • By Rail: It is the most convenient way of transportation in Hong Kong. The Mass Transit Railway (MTR) high-speed Airport Express is the fastest way between the downtown areas and the airport. The line whisks passengers from Hong Kong Station adjacent to the Central MTR Station on Hong Kong Island via Kowloon and Tsing Yi stations to the airport in about 23 minutes. Trains run every 12 minutes. A free Airport Express shuttle bus service from Hong Kong and Kowloon stations serves major hotels. Both these stations provide free in-town check-in services.
  • By Taxis: Here taxis are mainly of 3 kinds - red, green and blue. The blue ones can only operate on the Lantau Island. The green ones can only operate in the New Territories. The red ones can go anywhere except for outlying islands not connected with a bridge. All three kinds can go to and from the airport. These are readily available from the taxi pick-up area in front of the Arrivals Hall. All fares are metered and there are fare details inside each cab.
  • By Buses: There are many big double-decker buses in Hong Kong with many different routes that go just about everywhere. Most of these buses are air-conditioned but there is no heater. Buses route numbering system, many of those with 3 digits go through one of the cross harbor tunnels. There are nine convenient Airbus routes called "A" routes that can take you to and from the airport with fewer stops than an ordinary city bus. When you exit the Arrivals Hall, turn right for Airbuses and ordinary city buses ("E" route buses).
  • By Ferries: Ferries can take you across the harbor. There are also ones that run between the main part of Hong Kong (i.e. Hong Kong Island/Kowloon) to the ‘outlying islands’ (e.g. Lantau Island, Cheung Chau, Peng Chau, Lamma Island). The Star Ferry is a must for tourists. It is just a short 5-minute ride between Tsim Sha Tsui in Kowloon and Central on Hong Kong Island. The ferry operates 6am to 11pm daily.
  • Rickshaw: Rickshaws are just for the tourists and are an unusual method of transport. Today they are used extensively for fun rides and photo sessions. These can be found at the Star Ferry in Central on Hong Kong Island.
