Greece History

About Greece Greece Cities Greece Hotels Greece Travel Guide

Ancient history of Greece is known as the cradle of western civilization. Greece was a land of small city-states where the inhabitants shared a language and a set of religious beliefs. This is the very place where in the long history of humanity, men of intellect, men of courage, and men of vision lived, created and set foundations. Of what existed and words that they spoke more than 2,000 years ago are still important and inspiring today.

Greece history has enjoyed a particularly complex, violent and lengthy history. The country saw a early beginning, founding the first 'city-states'. In 507-508BC the reforming King Cleisthenon created democracy and utopia followed. The war started of and the defeat of the Athenians by the Spartans in 323BC confirmed that power can be mightier than brains. Alexander the Great's early death in the same year bought an end to Greek expansion, leaving the Romans to pick up the pieces.

This saw the beginning of Greece history as an occupied country. The Goths bought their own brand of disorder, and after Byzantine rule the Crusaders stopped en-route to bashing the Moslems for a spot of recreational plundering. The fall of Constantinople in 1453 lined up the way for Greece’s inclusion into the Ottoman Empire. Eventually the Greeks had enough and decided to rebel. The rebel kicked a war of independence that began in 1821, drew poets such as Shelley and Byron to its cause. By the mid-19th century Greece was independent again, but disorganized.

During the First World War Greece joined hands with Britain and France, once again trying to hold back the Turks, which they continued doing after the armistice. This saw Nazi occupation and on their withdrawal Greece became an unlikely Cold War hot spot. Instability resulted in an army coup in 1967. Greece now being a member of the European community such kind of activities has been reduced and democracy has returned.
