Gibraltar History

The city of Gibraltar is factually a British overseas territory that shares its frontiers with Spain. Historically rich, Gibraltar History is extremely interesting and worth knowing.
It was prior to 20th century that the Muslim ruler of Tangier- Tariq ibn Ziyad came to Gibraltar in 711A.D to begin Islamic invasion. Then in the year 1704, an Anglo-Dutch army seized Gibraltar during the War of the Spanish Succession. In the year 1713, Spain surrendered the Rock to Britain which later developed it into its central naval base. During the Franco period, Gibraltar became a bone of contention between Britain and Spain which led to the closure of its border from 1969 to 1985. Later in 1969, Gibraltar was given a new constitution, independent domestic government and a parliament of its own. In the present times although Gibraltar is an autonomous-region status but both the British and the Gibraltarians carry on to rebuff any negotiation over sovereignty. The British navy still continues to use Gibraltar as its imperative navy base in its Mediterranean operations. In the history of Gibraltar and even today it faces many problems regarding independence and autonomy.
