Ludwigshafen Germany is located on the River Rhine just a little opposite to Mannheim. Ludwigshafen has earned its place in the sun by giving to the world such gems as the former German chancellor Helmut Kohl, the philosopher Ernst Bloch and the German rock-climber Wolfgang Gullich. The early history of the city began in antiquity with the settlement of Celtic and Germanic tribes. The town from the beginning was a modest settlement which slowly started to gain prominence with the progress of industrialization. In addition the ideal transport facilities added momentum to the growth of the city. the city had its connection to the Saar Coalfields established with the establishment of the railway in 1849. the year 1865 is an important date in the history of independent Ludwigshafen. The giant BASF moved its factories from Mannheim to the Hemshof.
