Located on a hillock Porto Vecchio is a seaside resort, 25 km north of Bonifacio. This city possesses all the advantages of a seaside resort, along with some wonderful facets that only its natural environment can divulge. It is set overlooking a beautiful deep blue bay, and has been rated by James Boswell as one of "the most distinguished harbors in Europe". The town’s coast and its many beaches are the most cherished destination of tourists but there are many other ways to pass a fabulous journey in this area. Take a trip and discover the backcountry of the area, with its mountainous landscape and small rivers. The city was established in 1539 as a second Genoese stronghold on the east coast, Bastia being already well established in the north. The location was perfect near to the idle and fertile plain, it profited from secure high land and a sheltered harbor. For the place the things began to take off mainly thanks to the cork industry, which still flourished well into the twentieth century. Today from Porto Vecchio, a third of Corsica's wine is exported, but most of the revenue is collected from tourists. Radical changes and developments in decades have helped the city to overcome its isolation and now it appears among the best-equipped areas of the island. The seaside resort besides its coast and fantastic beaches has some other tourist attractions, which are worth a visit. La Tour Genoise is a square shaped tower, built in the 16th century. Today it is fully restored with its upper terrace offering fantastic views of the entire site. Inside the tower, there is an exhibition on the fortifications of the Corsican shores, which is quite interesting. The well-preserved Fortress is one of the most visited attractions in the area. East of the square one cannot but miss the Porte Génoise, which encloses a delightful expanse of sea and saltpans and through which you will find the quickest route down to the modern marina, lined with cafes and hotels. Accommodation is no problem with number of lodging options with Vente Maison Porto Vecchio one of a popular choice. |
