Nimes

Nimes map is 708km south of Paris, and 43km west of Avignon. Nîmes, the city derives its name from Nemausus ‘From the source’, is a great place to view some of the world's finest Roman remains. It’s just a 10-minute walk from the north of the town center. Its a low but rocky hill, topped by the sturdy bulk of the Tour Magne, the city's oldest Roman monument. You can climb it for a panoramic view over Nîmes and its environs.`

Nimes is home to a great number of museums. You can visit the Musée du Vieux-Nîmes, housed in an episcopal palace from the 1700s. It's rich in antiques.

One of the city's busiest thoroughfares, boulevard de l'Amiral-Courbet, leads to the Porte d'Arles. It is the remains of a gate built by the Romans during the reign of Augustus.
