Founded in 9th century, Colmar is the famous location where Charles the Fat held a diet in 884. It became a free imperial city of the Holy Roman Empire in 1226. It was ruled by armies of Sweden for two years during the thirty years of war. The city was conquered by France under Louis XIV in 1697. The Franco Prussian war was the cause of this city into going to the hand of Germany in 1871. After the World War I the city was once again annexed by France. Nazi acquired it in 1940 and then it went into the control of France after the battle of the "Colmar Pocket" in 1945.
Colmar France is 64 kilometers south-southwest of Strasbourg and situated on the Lauch River. It connects to the Rhine River by a canal. Culturally, Colmar is valuable place. This city comprises of several outstanding city centers, large scale buildings in German Gothic and early renaissance style. Plenty of old churches, too, are great attractions. Amongst the famous ones are collégiale Saint-Martin, which is the largest one. Martin Schongauer, the famous painter’s artwork and masterpieces are also there. Other notable church is: The Madonna of the Roses, in Colmar's Eglise des Dominicains(Dominican Church). You have a wonderful altarpiece to see in the city's Unterlinden Museum. |
