The town of Seinajoki has its origins around the Ostermyra bruk iron and gunpowder factories around 1798. It was made into a municipality in 1868 and awarded town status in 1960. In May 2007, a decision was taken to merge the smaller neighboring municipalities of Nurmo and Ylistaro with Seinajoki to form greater Seinajoki. The city has a town library and central administrative buildings which have been designed by Alvar Aalto. Seinajoki hosts tow large summer events which form a major cultural attraction for the tourists. These are ‘Tangomarkkinat’ which is a fabulous tango festival attracting an estimated 100,000 visitors annually. The other festival which is a big draw is the ‘Provinssirock’, considered to be the biggest rock festival in the country. The town offers many other sights for the visitors prominent amongst which are ‘the cross of the plains’, ‘the Southern Ostrobothnia District Museum’, ‘the Civil Guard and Lotta Svard Museum’, ‘the Tornava Church’ and ‘the railway exhibition’. The night life in Seinajoki picks up momentum at the time of the Tango Festival when the simply superb wonderful atmosphere is electrifying. The Seinajoki weather is conducive to a tour of the city.
