Tallinn situated on the southern part of the Gulf of Finland is the official capital city and the financial and political center of Estonia about one third of population of Estonia is settled in Tallinn. Other major cities in Estonia are Tartu, Kärdla, Jõhvi, Paide, Jõgeva, Haapsalu, Rakvere, Pärnu, Põlva, Rapla, Kuressaare, Valga, Viljandi and Võru. Tartu located in the south east of Tallinn is the second largest city and the cultural center of the country. It is the place where Estonia gained its statehood. The Peace Treaty with Soviet Russia on 1920 was signed here. Tartu is also known as University town. The age-old University of Tartu, Estonian University of Life Sciences and Baltic Defence College are located here. Parnu is a city on the Parnu bay on the south west of Estonia. It attracts tourists with its vast stretches of beautiful beaches. Tallinn’s ancient Old Town attracts tourists with its ancient walls, towers and streets. Tooempa district houses historical sites like the Lutheran Cathedral. The Lower Town area houses many walls and towers like Raekoja plats or Town Hall square. |
