England Food

Food in England has a traditional base of beef, lamb, pork, chicken and fish. These are generally served with a rich helping of potatoes and other vegetable. In spite of the traditionally rich food heritage of England, would you believe it that the most popular dish in England at the moment is ‘curry’! The most common England food eaten in almost all houses include the ‘sandwich’, ‘fish and chips’, ‘pies’, ‘trifle’, and ‘roast dinners’. In short, the typical staple England food is meat, fish, potatoes, flour, butter and eggs. Most other dishes are based on these foods.

There are many special types of food in England which are connected with certain festivals. On Shrove Tuesday one has pancakes. Good Friday is associated with hot cross buns and fish. Chocolate Eggs, Roast Lamb and Chicken are the special and favorite items had on Easter Day. The Simnel cake is the item for Mothering Sunday. On May Day one can try the ‘Maids of Honor cakes’ which are small round puff pastry cheesecakes which are at times flavored with almonds and rose water. Toffee Apples are the favorite on Halloween.

The food in England is an absolute delight on Christmas Day. A traditional Christmas meal would include Turkey, vegetables, stuffing, bread sauce, cranberry sauce and gravy. To top it one also has Christmas pudding flaming with brandy.

England food even on a Sunday is as elaborate as a Christmas meal. Sunday lunch, being a family affair has all the trappings of a traditional meal and includes roast beef and Yorkshire pudding in the main course. Yorkshire pudding is had large and flat filled with gravy and vegetables as a starter of the meal. When the meal is over, the unused portion of the pudding is served with jam or ice-cream as a dessert.
