About England England Cities England Hotels England Travel Guide

York England is a city in North Yorkshire, located at the union of the Rivers Ouse and Foss. The city urban area inhaits a population of 137,505 while the entire unitary authority has a population of 184,900. York England is the traditional county town of Yorkshire, to which it even lends its name. The citry was established in 71 AD, and was considered a Northern hub, passing through the hands of the Romans, Saxons, Vikings, and Normans. The diverse history of the city is clearly visible in its wonderful architecture - from Viking ruins and the walled city to York's most imposing building, the Minster. Northern Europe's largest Gothic Cathedral, the Minster took more than 250 years to complete, and is an impressive structure surrounded by beautiful gardens.

Traditionally the term City of York was reserved for the area within the city walls, but the modern City of York, created on April 1, 1996, is much larger. It is a unitary authority, and apart from York itself, includes several neighbouring parishes which formerly belonged to the surrounding districts of Harrogate, Ryedale and Selby. It borders on the non-metropolitan counties of North Yorkshire and the East Riding of Yorkshire though for ceremonial purposes is part of North Yorkshire. The city is the seat of the Archbishop of York, metropolitan bishop of the Province of York. York is home to the University of York, founded in 1963, and York St John University, which gained university status in 2006.

The York city is knee deep in history and visitors will find numerous York England attractions. From the remains of a Viking settlement discovered deep beneath Coppergate Street, to the medieval wall surrounding the old city and the splendour of Castle Howard. Some of the popular York England attractions in the city include the interesting Jorvik Viking Centre, the York Maze, the York Dungeons and the Shambles, one of Europe's best-preserved medieval cobbled streets. The Shambles area is always worth a visit, known for its zigzag narrow lanes, striking buildings and pretty shops. A better way to experience the historic city with its York England attractions is an enthralling tour. This city can not be only called as a historic city but it’s an amalgamation of both the old and new with the existence of York University.
