Norwich England is a popular destination among the tourists for a city break, located in East Anglia, in Eastern England. Additionally, the city is also the regional administrative centre and county town of Norfolk. The city goes back to Saxon times though there was a major Roman settlement at nearby Caister St Edmund. By the year 1066 Norwich was one of the largest towns in England and in 1096 work started on the cathedral. The castle which still is an important feature, the city centre was built not long after. The city has prospered, and population to become the second city of England by the early sixteenth century. It remained in a position of supremacy amongst English provincial towns till the industrial revolution. The development of the city over such a long period and the evasion of the revolution gave the city a very pleasant environment. The city’s important feature is its Norwich University, a private university located in Northfield, Vermont. It is home to both a Corps of Cadets (NUCC) and a smaller traditional student population. The University was established in 1819 at Norwich, Vermont as the American Literary, Scientific and Military Academy. Norwich University has always been an important and pioneering university, with a number of historical firsts to its record. Norwich was the first private military college in the nation, the birthplace of ROTC, the first private college in the nation to teach engineering, and the model for the world-renowned American System of Education. These are only a few of the firsts. The list goes on and on, to the present. |
