Manchester city is ain important city within Greater Manchester in North West England. The City of Manchester is a metropolitan area with city status. Manchester is a city of striking contrasts and is the centre for finance, commerce, retail, culture and leisure. Moreover, it is home to a major international airport and a large student population in Europe. The city is best known for its football teams, but Manchester city was once one of England's greatest Victorian cities and was the birthplace of both rail travel and Rolls Royce. The long reputation of being industry dependent, the city has succeeded in reinventing itself into a thriving, modern, dynamic, international city. Though, manufacturing industry remains important, the city has seen tremendous growth in the knowledge- based economy and today is in the top ten of European cities for business location. The city has been voted Britain's best city for business in a national survey of over 5,000 of the country's biggest employers in 28 cities. The famous Manchester university is located in Manchester with over 35,000 students, offering 500 academic courses, and employes more than 10,000 staff. The present University was formed in 2004 by the dissolution of the Victoria University of Manchester and UMIST (University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology) and the formation of a single institution. The new Manchester university has the largest number of full time students of any university in the UK, unless the University of London is counted as a single university. It teaches more academic subjects than any other British University. |
