The City of Leeds is a metropolitan region with city status, located in the metropolitan county of West Yorkshire, England. The city has got its name from its major settlement, Leeds, which is also the administrative seat. To the south and west, the borders of the district cover mostly urban and suburban areas, with some woodland. To the east and north, the district also includes urban and suburban areas with a little green space, as Temple Newsam Park, Roundhay Park, and Potternewton Park all lie in the east of the city.
City of Leeds is a lively city, rich in culture and heritage with lots of opportunities to explore. The city inhabits more than 750,000 people and over 100,000 people come to work in the city daily. With thousands more tourists and visitors come to the city to shop, eat out or enjoy the various tourist attractions it offers. It is regarded as Britain’s greenest city with more parkland in ratio to its population than any other and lying second in Europe only to Vienna. Its two major parks are at Temple Newsam which at 1000 acres is Europe’s largest urban park and Roundhay with its two lakes that cover 750 acres.
The city has a rich historical background, with two universities, and then schools of medicine and dentistry, of art and music and amongst its many museums are two of international status – the Royal Armouries and the Thackray Museum of Medicine. Some important historic houses are the Bramham Park, Harewood House, Lotherton Hall and Temple Newsam House. With four theatres and many other entertainment venues the city is all alive. The city has turned out to be a big time sporting city as it’s a frequent venue for international events. Hotels in Leeds provide with great accommodation options to its visitors. With, the city hosting many international events many excellent hotels in Leeds have come up complementing the city.
Leeds University is commended world-wide for the quality of its teaching and research. One of the largest universities in the UK, Leeds is also the most popular among students applying for undergraduate courses. An emphasis on innovative research and investment in high-quality facilities and first-rate infrastructure means that no fewer than 35 departments are rated internationally or nationally 'excellent'. Its size and international reputation enables the University to offer one of the widest ranges of academic courses in the UK. During the current academic year over 32,241 students are attached to 700 different first-degree programs and 474 postgraduate degree programs. A further 32,062 men and women are enrolled on short courses with the University.
Leeds is now among the top ten universities for research in the UK and is internationally acknowledged as a centre of excellence in a wide range of academic and professional disciplines. Its broad research and skills base and superb facilities attract interest from major multinationals and small local businesses alike. Many of its research initiatives cross traditional subject boundaries and Leeds currently promotes projects through 58 inter-disciplinary centres and seven research schools.
