About England England Cities England Hotels England Travel Guide

Blackpool is a seaside town of Lancashire, in the north west of England. It lies along the coast of the Irish Sea, and is fifteen miles west from the city of Preston, and inhabits a population of 142,900. The town emerged as a major centre of tourism during the 19th century, particularly for the inhabitants of northern mill towns. On April 1, 1998 the town was made into an independent unitary authority. It is thought that the town got its name from a long gone drainage channel which ran over a peat bog. The water which ran into the sea at Blackpool was black from the peat and formed a "black pool" in waters of the Irish Sea. The people originating from this region are called "Sand Grown" or "Sandgrown'uns," but these terms may be applied to natives of any littoral settlement. The town boundaries are drawn very tightly, and exclude the nearby settlements of Fleetwood, Cleveleys, Thornton, Poulton-le-Fylde and Lytham St Anne's.

The Blackpool Tower is a tourist attraction in the town of Blackpool, Lancashire, in the north of England. The tower is 158 m (518 ft 9 in) tall. The tower was inspired by the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France. It first opened its door to the public on 14 May 1894 and is a member of the World Federation of Great Towers. It’s different from the Eiffel Tower, as it is not quite free-standing; its base is hidden by a building housing the Blackpool Tower circus. The top of the tower is accessed by two lifts which provide with four viewing platforms open to the public, the lower of which is completely enclosed. The Blackpool Tower is used as a transmission location by a local FM station and a variety of non-broadcast services. The tower is normally painted dark red, but for its centenary in 1994 was painted gold. In the year 1900, the tower was rebuilt with 14 platforms.

The city also has small Blackpool International Airport located at 4.8 km southeast of Blackpool, Lancashire in North West England. The airport was owned and operated by City Hopper Airports Limited, which also owns Wolverhampton Airport and Biella Airport in Italy, but has now come under control of new management after one of its two major shareholders bought out its partner. Several listed airlines operate from the Blackpool International Airport, as well as chartered holiday flights in summer months. Helicopter operations serve North West England’s Irish Sea offshore gas facilities. The airport is seeing passenger traffic rise, from 363,000 in the 12 months to November 2005 to 552,000 in the year to November 2006. Low-cost airlines see a big potential in Blackpool, with increasing passenger numbers.

Blackpool hotels the town offers provide with a comfortable stay, with all excellent facilities at their guest’s disposal. Moreover, the Blackpool hotels enjoy a central location in town making it an easy access to cities attractions.
