Birmingham city has acquired itself an image as a powerhouse of the Industrial Revolution in Britain. Today Birmingham is known as "the workshop of the world" or the "city of a thousand trades". Its a city and metropolitan region in the West Midlands, England. The city is the largest of England's main cities, and is usualy considered to be the United Kingdom's second city. The city’s people are known as 'Brummies', which is taken from the city's nickname of Brum. This comes in turn from the city's dialect name, Brummagem, which is derived from an earlier name of the city, 'Bromwicham'. One can find distinctive Brummie dialect and accent in the city. Birmingham city has a temperate climate. The weather is hardly extreme but there have been a few tornadoes in the area- the most recent being in July 2005 in the South of the city tearing homes and businesses in the area.

The ambition and tireless industry of its people has resulted in the development of a city today whose discoveries and innovations have created a worldwide impact., the city started as a small rural manor. The city saw its first mention in the Domesday Book as being worth 20 shillings. Over time Birmingham has been known by a variety of names originating for 'Bermham' in the Saxon times, Berm being the family name and ham meaning home. Birminghon city is famous for its English Birmingham University. The university was established in 1900 as a successor to Mason Science College, and is the earliest of the so-called "red brick" universities. In terms of number of applications per place the Birmingham University is placed presently as the 4th most popular university of the UK. Its  a major research-led institution, with over 18,000 undergraduate and over 11,000 postgraduate students presently studying in the university. The students are oferred with courses such as law, medicine, English and American Studies, which in particular are very heavily oversubscribed. The Birmingham University has been ranked 33rd out of 109 higher education institutions in the Times newspapaer’s 2007 good University Guide and 16th in the Guardian’s 2006 rankings. The university’s has produced numerous known and leadng academics. Moreover, it is ranked fifth nationally for Research Excellence.
