Brno is situated in the southeast of Czech Republic at the confluence of the Svratka and Svitava rivers. This city has the evidence of prehistoric inhabitance and traces of Celtic and Slavic settlements of 5th and 6th centuries AD. Brno got city status in 1243. It was also besieged by the Swedes, Prussians and French. It is one of the pioneer industrial centers of Czech Republic which is known for international trade fairs and for its textile and metal manufactures. Some of the prominent landmarks of Brno Czech republic are Mies van der Rohe's classic modernist Tugendhat Villa, Beneš Technical College, a music conservatory, and several fine museums. A perfect example of modern functionalistic architecture ‘Villa Tugendhat’ is close to the center of the city. It has designated as world heritage site by UNESCO in 2002. Arnošt Wiesner is another example of modern functionalistic architecture. Brno has a unique identification of being the oldest one motor racing city. The first race was Vienna- Breslau race in 1904 and in 1920 the city hosted the Brno- Sobesice hillclimb race. The Masaryk Circuit is famous for such sorts of events.
