Commonwealth Games 2010
The moment is coming close when India will host the biggest sports extravaganza in the country’s history. New Delhi, the capital city of India is going to hold 19th Commonwealth Games in extraordinarily attractive manner as these games are considered the ‘green’ games for the environment friendly organization. Scheduled to be held in between 3 October and 14 October 2010, the Commonwealth Games would test New Delhi and its capability to host a big sport event after the 1982 Asian Games.

How Delhi Won the Bid for Commonwealth Games
New Delhi was the second bidder after Hamilton of Canada for the Commonwealth Games 2010. However, New Delhi won the bid by a margin of 46/22 in a ballot of members held in November 2003 at the Commonwealth Games Federation General Assembly in Montego Bay, Jamaica. Moreover, the win was attributed to the fact that India had offered to pay for air tickets, boarding, lodging and transport as well as US$ 100,000 to each participating country.
Participating Nations or Commonwealth Nations
The origin of Commonwealth is often misconceived as the former colonies of British Empire; however, the truth is that not all current members were once British colonies. Living in misconception, the Commonwealth may be considered a term which is vaguely used to connote the modern descendent of the British Empire. There are 72 nations which are expected to send their teams in Commonwealth Games 2010.
The Opening Ceremony of Commonwealth Games
It is only the second time that Commonwealth Games are being held in Asia, before Delhi, Kuala Lumpur held the games in the year 1998. Now, the prestige and tradition of carrying out great Asian sprit is on the shoulders of organizers of the game in Delhi. The opening ceremony which is scheduled to be held in Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium is promised to be one of the fantastic showcases of Indian art and culture and ethos.
Green Commonwealth Games
The organizing committee has committed for ‘Green Commonwealth Games’ and for that it signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) which asks the hosting country to host a sustainable games and consider various facts before hosting a game which not only are environment friendly but also sustainable in construction and renovation work of venues.
Costs of Commonwealth Games
Various sources reveal that the total budget estimated for hosting the Commonwealth Games would be around US$ 1.6 billion which does not include non-sports-related infrastructure development in New Delhi. Most likely the 19th Commonwealth Games in New Delhi would be the most expensive Commonwealth Games ever. The last hosting city Melbourne spent nearly US$ 1.1 billion in the year 2006.
