Potosi

Capital city of the department of Potosí Bolivia, the city of Potosí is beautiful and charming. Boasting of being the highest city in the whole world, Potosi is located at the foot of the Cerro de Potosí. The name Potosi was coined by San Luis de Potosi. It is supposed that earlier mules were shoed with silver as there were difficulties in getting supplies of iron to the city. The city has a very famous and splendid baroque churches that has a places in the UNESCO lists of historical sites and also many monasteries.
The city of Potosí was discovered in the year 1546 when the silver deposits of Cerro Rico became famous. The mine of the Cerro Rico, Potosi was once the richest mines in the world history and is believed to have produced 60,000 tons of silver. 

 A visit to Potosí is incomplete if you miss out on the cooperative mines. The working process and conditions remain just the sane as they were in the colonial times. A good number of miners die of silicosis in their forties. The best way to enjoy your mine trip is to first visit to the miners' market to buy gifts for the miners. You may present them with coca leaves and cigarettes. A typical visit to the mine will have you walking and crawling through it for about 2 to 3 hours.
