Customer rights in case of defective products

Austria government implements strict laws to guarantee the sale flawless consumer goods. These rules are same for all kind of parties. No company gets the liberty to restrict the consumer rights. This law is known as Directive 1999/44/EC. And it states that the consumer shopping in the country gets the minimum guarantee of 2 years on products. If you find any defect in any of the products within six months of purchasing, that is taken to be there at the time of delivery, unless proved otherwise. Lack of conformity needs to be proved once the period of 6 months passes.

Two years guarantee on the product assures you to have any defects corrected free of cost with this period. You as a consumer have the right to ask the seller for repair of replacement of the products depending on its condition. Repair or replacement, whatever the case may be, needs to be done within reasonable time. Otherwise, you can demand for a price reduction or simply rescind the contract. In case of voluntary guarantees from the producers, the consumer does not lose his or her statutory rights.

No Exchange

It is illegal for consumers to exchange goods. Though you might find some traders engaged in such activities, the consumer must ask for a written confirmation of the trader’s agreement that allows him to exchange goods.

Currency

The Austrian currency is the Euro.

Tax

VAT (Value added tax) of 20% on most of the products in the country.
